Afreen becomes first to win Silver medal in Kyorugi for J&K

SRINAGAR, Sept 12: Created history, Afreen Hyder has won first-ever senior silver medal for Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir (JK-UT) in Kyorugi, a full-contact sparring discipline, in the history of J&K Taekwondo.
She represented Jammu and Kashmir at the 39th National Senior Taekwondo Championships held at Guwahati, Assam between 9 to 11 September. The Championship was organized by the All Assam Taekwondo Association, under the aegis of the Taekwondo Federation of India and recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.
Afreen Hyder faced fierce competition from athletes across the country. She won her first fight against Rajasthan by 5-0, 9-8; the second fight against Sikkim by 13-01, 15-01, third fight against Manipur by 7-0, 02-01, fourth fight against Madhya Pradesh by 02-01, 03-01 and in the final she lost to Kerala.
J&K Taekwondo coach, Atul Pangotra told Excelsior, “Afreen came to me first in 2016 for training and later she moved to an Academy in Madhya Pradesh. We are really proud of her success; she became the first senior girl to win a silver medal in Kyorugi, we are expecting more medals from her.”
Pertinently, after qualifying for the Senior National Taekwondo Championship, she trained hard in the camp, which was organized by the J&K Taekwondo Association and sponsored by the J&K Sports Council. Rajesh Pangotra, President of the J&K Taekwondo Association and Nissar Hussain, Vice President JKTA appreciated her performance.
