SSP Jammu, Chandan Kohli, said that these arrests came after meticulous operations carried out by the dedicated police teams of several police stations.
According to him, the chain snatching spree, which had gripped areas like Sainik Colony, Greater Kailash, Satwari, Trikuta Nagar, and Gangyal in Jammu South, had a distinctive pattern that caught the attention of the police officers probing the chain snatching cases.
He said special teams were deployed in different areas, which analysed the CCTV footages, paying particular attention to the motorcycles used by the snatchers.
The breakthrough came when one of the police teams in Channi Himmat began tailing the snatchers, eventually cornering and arresting them in Trikuta Nagar, where they snatched a chain from a woman before their capture, he said.
The police officer said that these accused, who were involved in five other thefts, were identified as Dharminder Kumar and Ram Sevak, hailing from Shamli, Uttar Pradesh.
He added that during further questioning of the accused, it came to fore that they had hid the stolen gold chains in Samba, awaiting sale in Delhi.
Prompt action led to the recovery of these chains, and the rightful owners will soon be reunited with their valuable ornaments, he said.
The SSP Jammu also doubted the involvement of the chain snatchers in other states like Delhi, Haryana, UP, and Punjab, as according to them, they were active for the past four years.
“Efforts are underway to collaborate with other state police departments for their identification and retrieval of stolen ornaments, if any,” said the SSP Jammu.
Meanwhile, in Jammu North, the SSP Jammu said that five incidents of chain snatching were reported in Canal Road, Roop Nagar, Janipur, and Paloura.
There, he said, a team of Police Station Janipur apprehended two individuals, identified as Akash and Rahul from Trikuta Nagar, Jammu.
“These individuals confessed to their involvement in five chain snatching incidents and revealed they had sold the stolen gold to Muthoot Finance. Legal action against Muthoot Finance company executives is being considered if their complicity in these activities is confirmed,” said the SSP Jammu.
The police credit the invaluable role played by community-installed CCTV cameras in these successful operations. They encourage residents to enhance security by installing CCTV cameras in their homes and businesses.
Additionally, jewellers have been urged to diligently verify the backgrounds of individuals attempting to sell ornaments.
