SRINAGAR, Jan 17: A delegation of the Copper Workers Trade Union met today with the Director of Handicrafts & Handloom Kashmir, Mahmood Shah.
During the meeting, the Union praised the recent steps taken by the department to prohibit the production of machine-made copperware in Kashmir.
The Director, on the occasion, briefed the Union representatives on the department’s various initiatives to promote genuine handmade copperware.
He assured them of the Quality Control Division’s commitment to prioritising the identification of fraudulent artisans and manufacturers in the copperware industry.
The Director stated that the department is actively taking measures, including promoting hand-carved copper products and conducting thorough checks on the sale of machine-made items posing as handmade.
It was also informed that the department plans to expedite the registration process for aspiring artisans and the formation of their cooperatives.
Director apprised the Union about the initiation of a QR code-based labeling process for hand-carved copper products to curb the sale of machine-made copper items and simultaneously boost the market demand for authentic handmade copper products.
The Union commended the Government’s amendment to the J&K Prohibition of Manufacture of Specified Copper Utensils (by machine) Act and pledged full support to the department in addressing the issue of machine-made copper items.
