Accused in acid throwing case convicted

JAMMU, Feb 13: Principal Sessions Judge Srinagar, Mohammad Shafi Khan today convicted Riyaz Ahmad, son of Ghulam Rasool of Maisuma Colony, who had thrown acid on a school going girl in Srinagar on January 2, 2013.
In the acid attack, the girl lost sight of her one eye and suffered severe burn injuries on her face. Following investigation into the case, police booked the accused under Sections 307, 325, 354, 341 RPC.
While convicting the accused, Principal Sessions Judge Srinagar observed, “the court deems it necessary to remind the State administration in particular the district administration of Srinagar about the effective regulation of sale of acid till formal rules in this regard are framed”.
“The Supreme Court vide Order dated 18.07.2013 had directed to ensure compliance of the directions on sale of acid with immediate effect”, Principal Sessions Judge said, adding “the court during the course of trial was informed that the State administration has provided a job to the acid victim and the medical expenses were also borne by the State”.
However under “Victim Compensation Scheme”, the Court directed that the victim shall be paid an amount of Rs 3 lakh as compensation which will also be in consonance with the directions of the Supreme Court. The Court sent the copy of the operative portion of this judgment to the District Development Commissioner, Srinagar for compliance of the directions.
