JIM&WS wraps up skiing courses in Sonamarg

SRINAGAR, Feb 21: The Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM & WS) concluded its Basic Skiing Course and Intermediate Skiing Course at its training area in Sonamarg.
The officials stated that the courses, which ran concurrently, saw enthusiastic participation from 93 individuals hailing from various corners of the country. With the aim of imparting comprehensive training in skiing techniques, officials mentioned that the courses also sought to cultivate a sense of healthy competition and camaraderie among the participants.
“Covering a wide array of essential skiing skills, including Sliding, Gliding, Schussing, and more, the curriculum was designed to provide a solid foundation for both novice and intermediate skiers,” PRO Defence said in a statement.
Additionally, officials noted that participants had the opportunity to engage in a peak-to-slalom competition, adding an element of excitement and challenge to their learning experience.
Notable recognitions were bestowed upon several participants for their outstanding performance during the courses. Among them were Bhakti Khakkar, Suchita Verma, and Mehr Billwaria, along with Victor, Idris Khurshid Wani, FC (NCC) Mayank Joshi, Ayan Naik, and Sheikh Misbah Ul Haque.
Furthermore, Cadet (NCC) Sujata Priyadarshini Sahoo and Zubair Ahmad Dar were lauded for their exceptional prowess in slalom skiing, with Sujata Priyadarshini Sahoo earning the title of the best overall student.
The Intermediate Skiing Course delved into more advanced techniques, including Traverse & Kick Turn, Stem Swing, and Parallel Turns, offering participants a chance to refine their skills under expert guidance.
Similar to the Basic Course, participants received medical lectures alongside their skiing instruction, ensuring a holistic approach to their training, officials said. Rahil Ahmad Chohan’s proficiency in Langlauf skiing was duly recognized, while his exceptional performance in slalom skiing earned him further acclaim. Nissar Ahmad Dar’s overall excellence throughout the course led to him being awarded the title of the best overall student.
