Kashmir’s 3 ULBs win Govt's city beauty contest

SRINAGAR, Mar 2: Three Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) from Kashmir have won the prestigious ‘City Beauty Competition’ held by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.
According to details, 37 ULBs registered for the competition in different categories from the Kashmir Division, and the winners include the Municipal Committee Kunzer, Municipal Council Shopian, and Municipal Committee Tangmarg/Gulmarg.
In these ULBs, Jamia Masjid Shopian, Municipal Park Kunzer, and Hospital Ward Tangmarg have been declared winners under the ‘Beautiful Heritage Site’, ‘Beautiful Green Space’, and ‘Beautiful Ward’ categories respectively, as per details.
The field assessment for the ‘City Beauty Competition’ was conducted by a third party engaged by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs.
After the field assessment was completed, an independent jury evaluated the data collected during the assessment.
During the assessment process, the evaluating parameters included easy accessibility to the site, access to services and facilities, artistic and cultural activities connecting communities, beauty of the space, and environmental conservation and sustainability.
Meanwhile, three locations in the smart city of Srinagar have emerged victorious in the State Level City (SLC) Beauty Competition-2024.
The areas that secured the City Beauty Competition award are Jehlum River Front and Polo View High Street, recognized as a ‘Beautiful Waterfront and Market Place in Union Territory of J&K. Additionally, in the Municipal Ward Category, Rajbagh Ward has been listed among the winners.
It is to be noted here that the ‘City Beauty Competition’ was designed and conceived by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, after the Prime Minister envisioned the City Beauty Competition to promote cleanliness and beautification in cities and towns.
The competition was launched with the objective of inculcating a competitive spirit within urban areas and providing an opportunity for towns to showcase their interventions towards creating beautiful, innovative, and inclusive public spaces such as green spaces, waterfronts, heritage/tourist sites, and commercial/market spaces.
Additionally, the objective was to promote the conservation of the rich traditions and cultural heritage of towns during the overall process of development.
