POONCH, Mar 3: Indian Army’s recently organized Border Battle Hockey Championship was really a great initiative and will serve as an inspirational event for the budding hockey players, not from Poonch district only, but for the players of the entire UT.
The Indian Army, which is always catering to the needs of thousands of youth, organized this hockey extravaganza at picturesque Astroturf in Poonch and involved a good number of youth in it.
Apart from the hockey teams of district Poonch, the teams from other districts of the Union Territory took part in this mega event. Organized under Operation Sadbhavana, the Tournament saw participation of seven boys and five girls’ teams, with three teams from outside J&K.
In the girls category, KK Hockey Club Jammu beat Stadium XI Jammu in the final, while in the boys category, Sonipat got the better of Poonch XI in the summit clash.
What was good for the health of the tournament was that the team from Sonipat was having some India Campers in it, who added colour to the success of the tournament and served as an inspiration for the youngsters.
“Encouraged by the presence of some top hockey players from outside the UT including a few India Campers, the local lads displayed extraordinary hockey skills to win the hearts of the spectators. Such tournaments serve as a launching pad in helping the players to blossom at the higher levels,” an Army Officer maintained.
The local populace was all praise for the Indian Army for holding this mega sporting event, which served a twin purpose of exploring young talent and helping the youth not to derail from the mainstream.
