SRINAGAR, Mar 14: An elderly woman died last evening due to alleged medical negligence by a doctor at a private hospital in Anantnag district.
According to details, the woman, identified as Haneefa, 60, wife of Muhammad Jabar Khanday, of Khushipora, district Anantnag, was declared brought dead at SKIMS, Soura, after being referred from the private hospital under the pretext of a “check-up”.
In a complaint filed with the police, the family stated that the doctor, after performing a nephrectomy (kidney removal surgery), instructed them to take the patient for a check-up at SKIMS.
The family claimed that the patient was unconscious when taken to SKIMS, where doctors revealed the severe damage done during the surgery at the private hospital.
The family’s allegations are substantiated by the SKIMS Medical Certificate, which stated the cause of death.
According to the certificate, the patient suffered cardiopulmonary arrest, leading to hemorrhagic shock due to “abdominal aortic injury”.
As per the document, the patient passed away around 10:20 pm on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, in the Surgical Accident and Emergency section of SKIMS, Soura.
It is noteworthy that the surgery was performed by the doctor, who has an MCH Urology degree from SKIMS, at Shehjar Super Speciality Hospital, from where the patient was referred when things apparently went out of control.
According to the family, the need for the surgery-to remove the patient’s left kidney-arose following the detection of a cyst, and before that, pain, which, as per the family, called for emergency measures “to save the other kidney”.
The family was also asked to arrange blood for the patient, raising a question mark over the hospital’s ability to handle such situations.
The situation was aggravated due to excessive blood loss, explained by the haemorrhagic shock, leaving the doctor with no option but to shift the patient.
Notably, haemorrhagic shock is a medical emergency where the body begins to shut down due to heavy blood loss, leading to death-which happened in this case.
Meanwhile, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Anantnag, Dr. M.Y. Zagoo, informed Excelsior that the police are currently investigating the matter, while a committee formed by the Health Department is also ascertaining the facts.
