JAMMU, Mar 26: Teacher’s XI & Great Warriors entered into the finals of Martyrs Cup T20 Cricket Tournament being organised by Veteran Cricket Association J&K at MA Stadium Jammu.
Bisham Batra, Director Batra Group was Chief Guest who was accompanied by Ashish Singh, Vivek Suri & Amit Kumar, President, General Secretary & Vice president of Veteran Cricket Association J&K.
Bisham Batra lauded the efforts of executive members of the Championship in conducting this mega event at Jammu by involving passionate cricketers, including the players from Kashmir region with the sole aim to promote veteran sports culture and to inspire youths in sports so that they stay away from drugs and other illegal activities.
In the Group of Death, all 3 teams were having an outright chance to qualify for finals on Net run rate. Vivek Suri, Captain of Veteran Cricket Association J&K XI won the toss and elected to bat first and the team got off to a good start despite losing early wickets. VCAJK scored 152 runs in 20 overs losing 9 wickets. Bhanu Gupta & Puneet Waatal scored 39 & 30 runs respectively. For Secretariat Sultans CC, Jamat Ali took 4 wickets; M Y Ittoo took 2 wickets whereas captain Nazir Ahmed, Waseem Baba & Ijaz shared 1 wicket each.
To qualify for Finals VCAJK XI had to restrict Secretariat Sultans under 105 runs whereas Secretariat Sultans needed 125 runs to surpass the third team of Teacher’s XI. VCAJK XI bowlers were on the money from the beginning and dangerous looking Naseer was brilliantly stumped by Rajesh Bandral. At one point Secretariat Sultans were reeling on 85 for loss of 8 wickets but Waseem Baba kept his cool, ensured that his team crossed required 125 runs as per Run Rate. But there was a twist in the tale as a mix up and last wicket run out of batsman of Secretariat Sultans gifted Teacher’s XI to qualify on NRR. Waseem, Tariq & Mushtaq scored 35, 22 & 20 runs respectively. Veteran Cricket Association J&K XI won the match by 24 runs as Koushal Sharma took 3 wickets; Ashish Singh took 2 whereas Rahul Kait & Pawan Sharma shared 1 wicket each. Koushal Sharma was declared as Man of the Match.
