UDHAMPUR, Feb 24: Government Degree College Udhampur clinched ‘the first of its kind in the State’ Silver Rolling Volleyball Trophy in men’s category, while in women’s category GCW Gandhi Nagar Jammu lifted the same in the 1st State level Inter-Collegiate Volleyball Championships (for men and women ) for the Annual Silver Rolling Volleyball Trophies instituted and inaugurated by Governor of J&K State, N N Vohra at GDC, here.
Balwant Singh Mankotia, MLA and an alumnus of the College was the chief guest, while Dr Nutan K Resutra, Nodal Principal GGM Science College Jammu was the guest of honour.
While giving away the trophies he congratulated the College for organizing this Championship.
“This is the first ever College in J&K to host an event of this magnitude in Sports for a Trophy instituted by the Governor. The dynamism of this College is exemplary for others to emulate. Both the teams displayed a high level of performance and neck-to-neck competition made us all awe-struck,” Mankotia said.
Dr Resutra, over-whelmed by the success of the Tournament, said that the College has capacity to perform beyond imagination.”
Prof Sudhir Singh conducted the proceedings of the closing ceremony.
Earlier, in the summit clash, Govt Degree College Udhampur defeated GGM Science College by 3-2 (25-23, 24-26, 22-25, 25-16, 18-16) in the men’s section, while in women’s section, GCW Gandhi Gandhi Nagar trounced GCW Parade Jammu by 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-18).
In the semifinals played in the morning session, GGM Science College beat GDC Ganderbal by3-2 and GDC Udhampur beat New Age College Phinter by 3-0 in men’s category. In women’s category GCW Gandhi Nagar beat GCW Udhampur by 3-0 and GCW beat GDC Udhampur by3-0 . Prof. Sudhir Singh conducted the proceedings.
Meanwhile an exhibition match between the veteran spikers and current players was also held as special attraction of the day.
The matches were officiated by Amit Sharma, Shashi Sharma, Manik Nargotra, Naveen Sharma, Sanjeev Verma, Ajeet Singh, Kuldeep Sharma, Sanjay Sharma, Rakesh, Sanjeev Kumar and Vishal Gupta, under the supervision of Dr Sanjay Verma, Convener of the Technical Committee and Vijay Gupta, PTI.
31 teams drawn from across the State participated in this Tournament.
Ashok Kumar, Director SMVDSB, SS Bhalwal Principal GDC, Udhampur, Dr Yudhvir Singh, Principal GCW Udhampur, Sukhdev Singh, District Youth Services and Sports Officer, retired faculty of the College, alumni, veteran players of the town, other members of the civil society, Dr S K Magotra, Prof Rakesh Gupta, Dr Udey Bhanu, Dr Sanjay Verma, Prof Kamal Kishore, Prof Suresh Dogra Prof G R Verma, Prof Ramesh Chander & Dr Ajay Sharma were prominently present to witness the matches.
