SRINAGAR, May 8: Eyeing to implement it for habitual and hard-core drug-peddlers in days to come, the police in North Kashmir’s Baramulla today installed a GPS tracking anklet on a drug peddler out on bail.
The authorities stated that the installation of the device has been done to effectively track the accused, ensuring that they remain within a designated jurisdiction while out on bail and do not engage in any illicit activities.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla, Amod Ashok, shared details about the move, stating that it is part of broader efforts by the police to combat the drug menace in the district.
“We are now utilizing GPS tracking technology, installed on drug peddlers who have been granted bail. This has been implemented on a pilot basis,” he said.
He mentioned that several actions have been taken to address the issue, and the installation of the GPS tracking device is another step in that direction.
Explaining the rationale behind using the GPS tracking anklet, SSP mentioned that specific conditions are imposed by the court when granting bail, and the accused must adhere to these conditions.
“Violation of these conditions can lead to the cancellation of bail. One such condition is that the accused cannot leave a designated territorial area,” he added.
SSP observed that drug-peddlers often breach the condition of staying within a specific area. “To monitor this and ensure compliance with the imposed conditions, we have employed this technology,” he stated.
It is to be noted here that the monitoring of the tracker is conducted at the centralized police laboratory, and in the event of a violation, appropriate action is taken.
“If a breach of the conditions is detected, we proceed to court to have the accused’s bail revoked. Essentially, this effort aims to ensure that bailed-out drug-peddlers do not engage in illicit activities, and their activities are monitored,” Amod explained.
