JU organizes skill development workshop on Basohli painting

KATHUA, May 19: Kathua Campus, University of Jammu, organized three-day skill development workshop on the world famous Basohli painting popularized for its miniature art style from May 17-19, 2024.
The workshop commenced with an impressive turnout of students from the Institute of Music and Fine Arts and Kathua Campus. Soham Singh Billawaria, a celebrated Basohli miniature artist was the event’s resource person. With his expertise, participants explored the intricate techniques and storied history of Basohli miniature art.
Through interactive sessions and hands-on demonstrations, students gained insights into Basohli painting, delving into its rich history and techniques. Additionally, IMFA faculty provided guidance on fundamental art skills and techniques.
The culminating day of the workshop witnessed the presence of the Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu as the chief guest, accompanied by Prof Meena Sharma, Dean Planning and Development (JU) and Prof Neelu Rohmetra, Dean Research Studies (JU). The guests visited the painting workshop area and took a round of the entire campus followed by valedictory function.
Prof Umesh Rai stressed upon the importance of skill development as it contributes to self-confidence, holistic growth and development, and entrepreneurship. He expressed that such skill based training helps learners to find, develop, and maintain their inherent talent particularly in the field of painting.
Prof Meena Sharma highlighted the significance of fine arts education and cultural exchange in today’s society.
Prof Neelu Rohmetra emphasized the importance of art in education and the preservation of cultural heritage. Further, she stressed that students should pursue their artistic endeavors. She also underscored the significance of organizing such initiatives in nurturing talent and promoting cultural exchange.
Prof Arvind Jasrotia, Rector, Kathua Campus informed that the workshop on Basholi miniature painting was aimed at fostering artistic talent and promoting cultural heritage.
Dr Neeraj Sharma, Special Secretary to VC JU; Irfan Goni, Campus Development Officer, JU; Rakesh Sharma, HOD Fine Arts; Dr Amarjeet Singh, and Amandeep Singh from IMFA; Dr Vivek Sharma, Academic Coordinator, Kathua Campus; Dr Sourabh Shastri, I/c Head, MCA, Kathua Campus and others were present on the occasion.
