UDHAMPUR, June 8: Wrestler Benia of Basantgarh (Udhampur) defeated his opponent Ashish from Delhi and won the title bout of the mega Dangal organized jointly by local villagers of Bridean and Dangal Committee of Lerhi today.
Sunil Verma (district president, National Conference), graced the occasion as the chief guest. The grand event attracted numerous participants and spectators from the region. Chaudhary Mohammad Rashid (district secretary of NC), Captain Rattan Singh (block president, NC Majalta) and many others graced the occasion.
In the final bout, local wrestler Benia (Deputy SP of J&K Police) defeated wrestler Ashish (from Delhi) and won the title comprising Rs 1 lakh award. A number of prizes amounting to thousands of rupees were also given to winners of different categories.
Speaking on the occasion, Sunil Verma laid stress upon diverting youth towards sports amidst the rising concern of drug abuse. He emphasized, “Engaging in sports is a powerful way to channel the energy of our youth positively. It keeps them healthy, disciplined, and away from the menace of drugs.”
Also present on the occasion were Prakash Verma (organizer), Dara Singh (ex-panch), Subhash Singh, Vinay Sharma, Vikram Choudhary, Tarun Sharma, Madan Lal and all members of Dangal committee.
