SRINAGAR, June 29: In a significant milestone, the Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag performed its first Whipple procedure today.
A spokesperson of the GMC Anantnag said that this operation is crucial for treating pancreatic cancer and other related diseases, involving the removal of the head of the pancreas, the duodenum, part of the bile duct, the gallbladder, and part of the stomach. “The surgery demands exceptional skill, precision, and teamwork, all of which were demonstrated by the GMC Anantnag teams,” he said.
He highlighted that the surgery was conducted by a team of surgeons, including Dr. Khalid Basheer, Dr. Mujtaba, Dr. Manmohan, and Dr. Manzoor Parrey, under the guidance of the Head of the Department of Surgery, Dr. Nazir Ahmad Wani. The patient is reported to be doing well post-operation.
“The anesthesia team, comprising Dr. Anjum Shamim, Dr. Zafar Malik, Dr. Shayesta, Dr. Khalida, Dr. Showkat, and Dr. Andleeb, played a crucial role in ensuring the patient’s safety and comfort. Their work was overseen by Prof. (Dr.) Rukhsana Najeeb, the Principal of GMC Anantnag and Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care,” he said.
He said the team employed advanced modalities for optimal care, including the use of an epidural catheter for pain management and comprehensive monitoring under general anesthesia. “Given the patient’s advanced age and multiple comorbidities, including hypertension, the anesthesia team’s expertise was instrumental in the surgery’s success. The procedure lasted 6-7 hours and was executed with meticulous skill by the dedicated doctors, technicians, and support staff,” he said.
He added that Prof. Rukhsana Najeeb, with over 25 years of experience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care at GMC Srinagar, provided invaluable support and guidance throughout the procedure.
