4 State climbers to attend Advanced Course in Mountaineering

JAMMU, Mar 26: Mountaineering Association of J&K will depute 4 climbers namely Anil Kumar, Shashi Kant, Mrigank Kaushal and Aman Arora for a 3-day Belayers’ Course at Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi, the apex body for surface adventure sports in the country.
The course is being conducted by Indian Mountaineering Foundation North Zone Committee from March 31 to April 2, 2014.
The aim of the course is to produce trained belayers who can maximize the safety of the climbers during sport climbing training and competitions.
It is pertinent to mention here that a belayer is the official who handles the climbing rope during a person’s climb and is responsible for the safety of the climber during a lead or a speed climbing competition.
During the course the trainees will be imparted knowledge about harnesses and their proper use besides familiarity with the belaying devices. They will also learn how to stop all kinds of falls of climbers during a climb in a safe and dynamic manner. Instructions and rules about checking the equipment before the climb and other safety measures will also be given to the trainees.
“The climbers will be sponsored by Mountaineering Association of J&K and will leave for Delhi on April 30, 2014,” informed Ram Khajuria, general secretary, Mountaineering Association of J&K.
