Srinagar, Mar 29: A police man was injured in a militant attack in South Kashmir district of Pulwama while Army averted a major tragedy when they recovered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Srinagar today.
A policeman was injured in a militant attack on a police party at Kakpora area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district this evening. Sources said that the heavy deployment of Indian Reserve Police (IRP) men was made today ahead of PDP President Mehbooba Mufti’s visit to areas in and around Pulwama town. “At around 5:05 pm, militants opened fire on the IRP party resulting in injuries to a cop”, sources added.
“The fire was retaliated, however, the militants managed to escape from the spot after carrying out the attack”, sources said, adding that the injured cop Javid Iqbal of IRP 18th battalion was rushed to district hospital Pulwama for treatment where his condition is said to be stable.
Army and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police cordoned off the Kakpora and its adjoining areas to track the militants responsible for the attack. However, no one was arrested.
Earlier, militants fired upon an Army patrol party at Palhalan in Pattan area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
An Army officer said that at around 8:30 am militants fired upon the Road Opening Party of 29 RR, near New Colony, Palhalan, Pattan in district Baramulla. “Army didn’t fire back, as it was residential area. However, the troops cordoned off the area and carried out searches”, the officer said.
“During the search, security forces recovered one Ak-47 Rifle, along with one magazine and 9 rounds of AK ammunition hidden under a pile of woods”, the officer said.
In the morning, Army averted a major tragedy in Srinagar when a patrol party recovered an IED in Bemina. The 10 kilogramme IED was fitted in a pressure cooker and bomb disposal squad later defused the IED.
