Income Tax Department Jammu and Kashmir Circle is all agog with the good news that it has collected far more than the targeted amount for the financial year 2013-14. Its total collection has been Rs. 1058 crore which is Rs 177.47 crore more than the target fixed by CBDT. This is an unprecedented achievement and according to the Commissioner Income Tax, all sections of society and business fraternity have cooperated to maximum. This achievement is also owing to the strenuous efforts made by the functionaries of the department. An amount of 96 crore rupees was paid back by way of refund during the current financial year. At the same time another achievement of the department was recovery of arrears to the tune of Rs 51 crore.
This is a good news and we have always been imploring the tax assesses to be regular in filing their returns and paying the tax on their income. This is a national duty and evasion of tax is a crime to be punished under law. However while we appreciate the efforts of the Income Tax Department, we are hopeful that no injustice is done to anybody and no arbitrary decisions are taken while disposing off pending income tax cases. It is also hoped that tax evaders will change their mindset and come forward voluntarily to pay the taxes that are due. If they don’t do that naturally the law will come into motion and they shall have nothing to complain about.
