With his own panoramic view of the state of affairs around him he made a distinct place for himself in the world of literature. In the literary constellation, Khushwant Singh has been one of the brightest stars of his time. A best known story writer and novelist, acclaimed columnist, outstanding journalist, reputed editor, great scholar, historian, philosopher, trendsetter and a mentor he was. Whatever he wrote for about more than half a century, was bold and by and large nonconformist. He didn’t believe in obscurantism and pomposity.
Many of us may not adhere to his philosophy of treating religious scriptures as historical writings and places of worship to be converted into schools, colleges and hospitals but he had the tenacity to put forth what he believed.
For an agnostic Khushwant Singh, care of fellow humans, living with one’s free will, nishkamsewa and the truthful conduct was the true religion. He enjoyed jesting but he took his work seriously and himself lightly. He was really a brand in himself.
