LEH, Aug 19: The Department of Sociology at Eliezer Joldan Memorial College (EJMC) conducted a fascinating research field trip to the Changthang region. The three-day excursion involved 60 students from the 3rd and 5th semesters, guided by Dr. Tashi Lundup and Dr. Stanzin Namgial.
The trip began with an introduction to the agro-pastoral community of Gya Valley, led by Karma Sonam from the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF). This session included insights into conservation efforts and the innovative Sangdong to Stupa project, which addresses human-wildlife conflict. Students then trekked through the area, deepening their understanding of local conservation strategies.
A highlight of the trip was the engagement with the Samad-Rokchen pastoral community in Noray. The students had the chance to explore the nomadic lifestyle of the Changpa community, enriching their grasp of the region’s cultural and social dynamics.
On the second day, the group visited Tsokar Ramsar Wetland, where they observed diverse bird species, including the endangered Black-necked Crane. They also visited the Nomadic Residential School in Puga, interacting with students and enjoying a wildlife film screening in the evening.
The final day featured visits to the Puga Hot Spring and geothermal site, followed by a stop at the Chumathang Hot Spring. The trip concluded with the students returning to Leh, equipped with a profound understanding of Changthang’s ecological and cultural landscape.
This trip not only provided academic insights but also allowed students to experience the challenges and opportunities faced by communities in Ladakh. The students will soon share their findings and experiences with their peers at Eliezer Joldan Memorial College.
