*AP Singh, Pooja, Gurpreet shine in athletics

JAMMU, Apr 19: Former First Class cricketer Guru Partap Singh scored unbeaten 64 runs and scalped 3 important wickets to help Paradise XI thrash Royal Warriors by a margin of 39 runs in the semi-final to seal berth in the finals of the Lawyers Annual Sports Meet 2014, here today.
Earlier, batting first, Paradise XI scored a decent total of 128 runs in the stipulated overs. Guru Partap top scored with a masterful unbeaten 64 runs, while Nitin Bahsin contributed 16 runs to the total. For Royal Warriors, Surinder and Vinay took one wicket each.
In reply, Royal Warriors managed to score 89 runs to lose the match by 39 runs. Surinder and Raj Wazir contributed 15 runs each. For Paradise XI, Guru Partap was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 wickets, while Ajay Singh, Ravi Abrol and Sahil claimed one wicket each.
Earlier, in the 4th quarter-final, Legal Strikers trounced Strikers in a low scoring match.
Batting first Strikers scored 53 runs with Charanjeet Singh contributing 16 runs and Surjeet Singh Andotra 14 runs to the total. For Legal Strikers, Sanjay Sharma and A P Singh took 2 wickets each.
Legal Strikers chased the easily with Gourav Jamwal scoring 18 runs and Amit Chadha (15) to win the match convincingly and qualify for the semi-finals.
In Volleyball, Mavericks defeated Stickers in straight sets by (25-17, 25-18), while Lions Club got better of J&K HC Bar Club in straight sets by (25-18, 25-17).
In athletics girls 50 Meters Race, Pooja Jamwal, Surbhi Gupta and Gurpreet claimed gold, silver and bronze respectively, while in 100 Meters, Surbhi Gupta, Pooja Jamwal and Deepa Sharma claimed gold, silver and bronze respectively.
In Shot Put, Pooja Jamwal bagged gold, Gurpreet claimed silver and Vandana clinched bronze, while in Discus girls, Gurpreet, Pooja Jamwal and Tavishee got gold, silver and bronze respectively.
In Javelin Throw, gold, silver and bronze medals went to Gurpreet, Pooja Jamwal and Deepali Kapoor respectively, while in 200 Meters Brisk Walk, Ritu, Deepa Sharma, Surbhi Gupta and Surbhi Abrol won gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.
In Spoon Race, the first prize went to Surbhi Gupta, while the  second prize was won by Seema Koul and the third prize was bagged by Surbhi Abrol, while in Relay 150 Meters, the first prize was bagged by Pooja, Deepa and Surbhi Gupta; second by  Gurpreet, Ritu and Surbhi Abrol and the third prize by Sonia, Seema and Deepali Kapoor.
In Three Leg Race, first prize was bagged by Deepa and Surbhi Gupta; second by Nisha and Sneha, while the third prize went to Surbhi Abrol and Gurpreet.
In Tug of War, Team led by Surbhi Gupta won the first prize with Surbhi Abrol, Deepa Sharma, Pooja Jamwal, Ritu and Gurpreet as its other members, while the team led by Seema Koul with Deepali Kapoor, Sonia Kapoor, Tavishi, Sneha and Nisha as the other members emerged runners-up.
In men’s athletic events, Javelin Throw gold went to A P Singh, silver to Surinder Singh and bronze to Avinay Sharma, while Triple Jump gold went to A P Singh, silver to Avinay Sharma and bronze went to Prem N Sadhotra.
The Long Jump gold was bagged by A P Singh, silver was clinched by Saqib and bronze went to Avinay Sharma, while in Discus Throw, A P Singh won gold, Avinay Sharma got silver and Masood claimed bronze.
In Shot Put, A P Singh, Deepak Singh and Avinay Sharma bagged gold, silver and bronze respectively.
The 100 meters sprint gold went to Saqib, silver to Taraiz and bronze to Divay Ishan, while Saqib, AP Singh, Pranav and Taraiz won 4×100 Meters Relay gold, while Prem N Sadotra, Avinay, Divay Ishan and Sahil bagged silver and the bronze was bagged by Gourav, Suresh, Varun and Sahil Anand.
In Tug of War, Mavericks led by A P Singh  with Prem N Sadotra, Deepak, Pranav, Jatinder Singh, Sahil, Avinay, Nikhil, Taraiz and  Vishal Abrol emerged winners, while the team Jai Hind led by  Umesh Sharma with Jyoti Mishra, Ajay Kumar, Ravinder Kumar, Daleep Bhan, Nitin, Divya Ishan, Pardeep Majotra, Gurveer Singh and Charanjeev Singh as its other members emerged runners-up.
The third position in this event went to Superman team led by Rajiv  with Rohit, Sahil Sharma, Gourav Goutam, Varun, Sandeep, Sahil, Gurpreet Singh, Sandeep Sharma and Amarveer Singh as the other members.
The final matches of cricket and volleyball will be played tomorrow and Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand will distribute the prizes, while Minister for Sports, Raman Bhalla will preside over the function.
