JAMMU, Oct 19: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic Rural Jammu, Vinay Kumar, today conducted awareness sessions in Samba and Kathua districts, focusing on road safety for bikers and motorists.
During these sessions, he emphasized the importance of wearing safety gear, especially helmets, which significantly reduce sthe risk of head injuries in accidents.
Kumar urged bikers to always wear securely fastened helmets, including for pillion riders and avoid dangerous practices like using mobile phones, triple riding and reckless driving.
He highlighted a World Health Organization study showing that helmets reduce the risk of head injuries by 70% and prevent fatalities in 37% of cases.
Kumar also cautioned bikers against wrong-lane driving, shortcuts, and stunts, which endanger lives.
For bus and mini-bus operators, Kumar stressed obeying traffic signals, stopping at designated stops, avoiding overloading, and ensuring visibility by removing stickers from windows.
He also warned against vehicle modifications, especially non-standard tyres, which increase the risk of accidents.
The SSP Traffic Rural Jammu appealed to all drivers to ensure their number plates are clear and visible, as concealing them is a crime and could result in licence cancellation.
He urged commuters to cooperate with traffic police for better management and safer roads, especially with ongoing construction on the national highway.
The awareness programs were held under the supervision of IGP Traffic J&K, M Suleman Choudhary, and DIG Jammu Range, Dr Mohammad Haseeb Mughal.
The SSP Traffic Rural Jammu, Vinay Kumar was accompanied by other traffic officers during the campaign and called for more sessions to educate the public, particularly youth, on traffic laws and safety measures.
