JAMMU, Apr 29: An impressive May Day rally was taken out by the State Government employees in the winter capital city here which projected the burning issues of workers and pensioners.
A large number of state employees/ workers from various Government departments and Public Sector Undertakings, led by veteran Trade Union leader Abdul Majid Khan, under the banner of J&K Low Paid Employees Federation, assembled at Parade Ground here this afternoon and started massive rally. Several district heads of the Federation and members also participated in the May Day rally.
The workers were carrying banners and placards depicting employees’ demands including, regularization of daily wagers, consolidated/ ad hoc workers, release of their pending wages and other pay arrears of employees and pensioners, enhancement of medical allowance from Rs 300 to Rs 1000 and implementation of next 7th Pay Commission in view of rising prices of every item.
The rally which commenced from Parade Ground, after passing through Purani Mandi, City Chowk, Rajinder Bazar reached Shahidi Chowk. They were raising slogans in support of their demands. The participants paid their tributes to martyrs of Chicago.
Abdul Majid Khan, State president of the Federation besides other trade union leaders including Bashrat Ali from Rajouri, Krishan Singh and Kabla Singh from Kathua addressed the workers. They criticised the Government for ignoring the long demands of the employees and the pensions. Mr Khan recalled the importance of May Day and maintained that the sacrifices of the workers who laid down their lives in 1886 in Chicago (USA) for the sake of the rights of the labourers, can not be forgotten.
Meanwhile, in Udhampur the proposed May Day rally programme on May 1, was discussed in a meeting held under the chairmanship of Tilak Raj Manotra, vice president PHE Workers Welfare Association. The employee leaders from various departments attended the programme and resolved to start march from Jakheni Park at 11 am to pay tributes to the Chicago martyrs. Jagdish Chander, Pritam Sharma, Gulzar Ahmed, Parkash Chand, Ashok Kumar, Kamal Dev and others also participated.
