JAMMU, Apr 29: Continuing agitation against the police highhandedness, J&K High Court Bar Association, Jammu today held strong protest demonstrations in the Court Complex at Janipur and took out peaceful protest march.
Large number of lawyers gathered in the Court Complex this morning and held massive protest demonstration against the Police Department for not taking action against those cops who had beaten up Advocate Harshvardhan Gupta.
The agitating lawyers also disrupted the vehicular movement on Janipur road by holding protest demonstration. Later, they took out a peaceful march which passed through New Plots, Ambphalla Chowk, Panjthirthi, Chowk Chabutra, Parade Bazar, Purani Mandi, Shalimar Chowk, Indira Chowk, Jewel, Bikram Chowk and culminated at Police Headquarters near Gulshan Ground.
Addressing the agitating lawyers outside Police Headquarters, President, J&K High Court Bar Association M K Bhardwaj, former Bar Presidents Sunil Sethi and D K Khajuria reiterated demand of suspension of erring police officials, which according to them was pre requisite for any fair, independent and impartial inquiry.
They further reiterated that suspension, which is not at all a punishment, as is being projected by the police authorities, neither amounts to victimization nor demoralization of police officials responsible for beating and illegally detaining its member Harshvardhan Gupta and instead it is a pre requisite for holding fair, impartial and independent inquiry.
“We have been compelled to adopt agitational path. In case our demand is not met we will further intensify the agitation, which will spread to every nook and corner of the State with the participation of every citizen, who is victim of police atrocities”, they said.
The Association has made an appeal to all the political parties, social organizations, civil society, students and all those who are aggrieved of such repeated illegal action of the police personnel to come forward and lodge protest against the human rights violations at the hands of police.
