Srinagar, Oct 28: With authorities failing to provide basic amenities, shopkeepers in Ganderbal’s Tawheed Chowk market shut down their businesses today in protest.
The traders stated that the Municipal Council, Ganderbal, and the Power Development Department (PDD) have repeatedly failed to address their demands for consistent power supply, street lighting and a proper drainage system.

Arif Bashir Bhat, president of the Bazar Committee Tawheed Chowk, emphasized their demands for round-the-clock power supply and solutions to other persistent issues affecting the traders.
“One side of the market receives electricity, while the other half does not. We’re also facing drainage and street lighting problems. These issues need immediate attention,” he said.
He added that the matter had been raised with authorities but without results.
“We brought this issue to their attention and were promised that smart meters would be installed to ensure continuous supply. The meters were installed, but round the clock electricity is still nowhere,” he said.
Er. Hakeem Jeelani, AEE of the Ganderbal sub-division, addressed the media, stating, “We are in the process and will fulfill their demands soon.”
Sheikh Ghayas-ud-Din, National Conference constituency in-charge for Ganderbal, also met with the shopkeepers and assured them that their grievances would be resolved.
“We will ensure these issues are addressed. I have spoken with the relevant authorities, and they have assured a timely resolution,” he said.
Regarding drainage and street lighting, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Municipal Council Ganderbal, Asif Mirza, stated that these issues would be resolved within a few weeks.
He also noted that encroachments by street vendors had been cleared by the Municipality to improve conditions in the area.
