SRINAGAR, Nov 27: The police martyrs’ women’s T20 cricket tournament began today at Hamayun Muzammil Government Degree College in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, honoring the sacrifices of police martyrs.
With a focus on fostering sportsmanship, unity, and remembrance, four teams featuring players from various areas of the district will compete in the tournament.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of South Kashmir, Javid Iqbal Matoo, inaugurated the event in the presence of senior police officers. In his address, DIG Matoo praised the initiative, emphasizing its role in paying tribute to the bravery and dedication of police martyrs. He encouraged participants to showcase their talent and teamwork, underscoring how sports promote camaraderie and healthy competition.
As part of the event, DIG Matoo also inaugurated a dry canteen and the newly constructed MT Section Building at District Police Lines (DPL) Anantnag. “These new facilities aim to enhance the welfare and working conditions of police personnel, contributing to their comfort and efficiency,” he stated.
Lone Sumiya, the head coach, expressed optimism about the tournament’s potential, noting its inclusion of players from remote areas. “I have been training players in South Kashmir for several years and have formed nearly four teams in the district. These players compete whenever opportunities arise, which is promising for the region’s sports development,” she said.
