Cricketer turns out to be robber

JAMMU, May 11: The main accused involved in robbery attempt in a house near Talab Tillo last night, has turned out to be a local cricketer of national level, who managed to escape due to apparent laxity of Policy.
Despite clear identification of the accused by the family members of Prof Sunil Uppal, whose house at Green Avenue near Suvidha Nursing Home was struck by three robbers last night, police failed to arrest the former, who was participating in final match of 2nd T-20 Tawi Premier Cup at MA Stadium this afternoon.
According to SP City Yougal Manhas, the accused namely Nitin Mehra of Kailash Nagar Talab Tillo managed to flee before Police could arrest him.
However, on the other hand, family members of Prof Uppal alleged that Police intentionally did not arrest the accused and allowed him to escape on the pretext of cricket match.
Infuriated over the alleged Police inaction, residents of Green Avenue locality held a strong protest demonstration on the Talab Tillo road and blocked traffic for more than two hours. They alleged that despite identification of the accused through CCTV footage, provided by the family members of Prof Uppal, Police did not act promptly.
The dharna was lifted after senior Police officers reached the spot and assured early arrest of the accused.
SP City told Excelsior that a major hunt has been launched to nab the accused who would be arrested soon.
As reported, three miscreants had barged into the house of Prof Sunil Uppal last night for robbery by brandishing a toy gun but their attempt was foiled by the family members.
