JAMMU, Dec 10: Chairman of the All J&K Transport Welfare Association, Karan Singh Wazir met with Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary at the Civil Secretariat and submitted him a memorandum seeking redressal of the pressing issues affecting the region’s transport sector.
Among the top priorities discussed was the longstanding demand for a comprehensive transport policy. Wazir emphasized that the absence of a clear and updated transport policy, aligned with advancements in infrastructure and technology, has hindered the sector’s progress. The current policy framework, he noted, fails to accommodate the rapid urbanization and modernization underway in the region.
“The deployment of e-buses and e-rickshaws, though a step towards sustainable mobility, lack a structured implementation. These vehicles often ply without an established time-chart, leading to traffic mismanagement and operational inefficiencies. The association calls for a systematic approach to integrate these green mobility options into the existing transport network, ensuring better coordination and smoother traffic flow,” read the memorandum.
Another pressing issue raised during the meeting was the outdated condition of transport terminals across the region. Wazir said that many terminals have not been upgraded to meet the demands of the growing population and evolving urban landscape. This stagnation has created logistical challenges, with inadequate facilities for traffic flow management and parking, he said and added that these inefficiencies not only disrupt operations of transporters but also strain their financial sustainability and thus urgent infrastructural modernization is needed.
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary acknowledged the concerns raised by Wazir and assured that the Government is committed to addressing these issues. He reiterated the administration’s focus on enhancing urban mobility and infrastructure as part of the broader development agenda.
Wazir was accompanied by Bharat Bhushan Sharma, Ranjit Singh, Kuldeep Singh, Labh Singh, Deepak Sharma, Vijay Dogra, Inderpal Singh and Harasis Singh.
