Petrol shortage in Leh and Kargil is posing threats of disruption of life in these two high altitude plateaus of the State. The Zojila Pass is normally opened for traffic around middle of April each year. But continued rains and snow have hindered the BRO opening the pass. Supplies could not be maintained because tankers carrying petrol could not move. The weather has somewhat stabilized and hopefully some vehicles have been allowed to move. We think there will be some relief in the situation. But it is a lesson for the authorities that they should maintain stocks of essential goods in the region beyond the middle of April because the weather is uncertain over the high mountains. However, this difficulty will be overcome permanently once the Zojila tunnel is completed which will help in keeping supplies of essential goods regular throughout the year. But if the weather is still inclement and the pass will not be opened for some more days, then the Air Force transport planes should be pressed into service to carry as much of petrol as these can to mitigate the serious problem arising out of shortage of petrol in Leh and Kargil.
