NEW DELHI, May 16: World leaders including Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today congratulated India’s Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi for leading the BJP to a resounding victory in the recently-concluded general elections.
Mr Nawaz Sharif called Mr Modi and congratulated him. He invited Mr Modi to visit Pakistan. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and British Prime Minister David Cameron also congratulated Mr Modi while President Rajapaksa invited Mr Modi for a State visit to Sri Lanka.
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Israeli Prime Minister Bengamin Netanyahu also congratulated Mr Modi and expressed desire to work together with him.
While Mr Albott said he looked forward to meet Mr Modi at the upcoming G-20 Summit in Australia, Mr Netanyahu said he looked forward to working together to enhance bilateral relationship.
Mr Cameron who called Mr Modi, said he was keen to work together with him for strengthening India-UK ties.
The UK ended a 10-year diplomatic boycott of Mr Modi in October when its High Commissioner in India met him for 50 minutes.
“Congratulations narendramodi on victory in India’s elections. Keen to work together to get the most from UK-India relationship,” the British Prime Minister said on twitter.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was the first foreign leader to congratulate Mr Modi.
She said the verdict was a testimony to Mr Modi’s “dynamic, inspiring, visionary leadership.”
Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India Prasad Kariyawasam welcomed the verdict and said soon President Rajapaksa would warmly welcome and greet Mr Modi.
British Foreign Minister William Hague said the UK looked forward to forging an even closer partnership with India in the months ahead.
With 815 million eligible voters, 915,000 polling stations, and nine days of voting over five weeks, India has seen the largest parliamentary election in the world, he said.
“The UK has strong ties with India and the British Government looks forward to working with the new Indian Government to build on this relationship and deliver security, growth and prosperity for both our nations,” the British Foreign Minister said in message released here by the British High Commission.
