JAMMU, May 21: Rich tributes were paid to the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 23rd death anniversary by the Congress activists and others across the State today.
A function in this connection on was held at PCC headquarters Shahidi Chowk, Jammu. It was presided over by the PCC vice president Th Hari Singh and attended by veteran leaders Pt Mangat Ram Sharma (former Deputy CM), Pt Dharam Pal Sharma (former MP), Mula Ram & Th Gulchain Singh Charak (Ex-Ministers), Ravinder Sharma-MLC, Vinod Sharma, Darshan Raina, Ch Zaffar Ullah, M A Nadaf (PCC general secretaries), president Mahila Congress Indu Pawar (MLA), Kuldeep Raj Verma (Vice Chairman OBC Board), Om Chopra (Ex-MLA), Prakash Sharma (Ex-MLA); Th Shiv Dev Singh (Ex-MLA), Ch Lal Mohammad Sabir (Ex-Minister), Shiv Kumar Sharma (President INTUC), S R Sudhir, Lalita Sharma and several other senior leaders of the party.
The speakers recalled the supreme sacrifice of Late Rajiv Gandhi for the unity and integrity of the country. He was assassinated on this day at a young age and the country was deprived of a dynamic leader. He was architect of the 21st century India who brought the revolution in the field of Information Technology. Today India is leader in computer and IT in the world due to the vision of Rajiv Gandhi.
He is also architect of present days Panchayati Raj in the country as he brought 73rd Amendment in the Constitution of India. The Panchayati Raj in the State has also been empowered on the pattern of 73rd Amendment. He strengthened the participatory democracy in this country at grass root level.
District Congress Committee, Kishtwar in a meeting also paid rich tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary today. Pardeep Singh Parihar- president DCC presided over the meeting which was attended by Haji Ghulam Hassan Mir, president BCC Kishtwar, Nek Ram Manhas- president BCC Paddar, Mohammad Aslam Malik (Member PCC), Hans Raj Bhagat, Nasir Hussian-advocate, Parkash Singh- district president NSUI, Manzoor Shah, Abdul Latief, Soba Ram Sharma, Parkash Ram, Isher Chand, Capt Karam Chand and other prominent citizens.
Paying rich tributes, the speakers described Late Rajiv Gandhi as a great visionary leader who lead the country towards the challenges of 21st century. They said it was the vision of Rajiv Gandhi that India has emerged as the leader of the world in Information Technology. It was because of his vision that whole world is looking towards India for addressing their problem of unemployment. They said it is Congress Party whose history is full of sacrifices, which has the vision and talent of leadership to lead the country towards overall progress and prosperity.
Rajiv Gandhi Memorial College of Education, Kathua also paid floral tribute to late Rajiv Gandhi. Anu Dogra, chairperson of the College, Dr G P Sachdev, Principal and staff members lauded his contributions and expressed their views on the development attained in the field of Science, Technology and Telecommunication.
District Congress Committee Udhampur in a function held under the leadership of Brij Mohan Sharma also paid tributes to Late Rajiv Gandhi. The speakers also recalled the contributions of Rajiv Gandhi in the field of Information Technology and strengthening Panchayati Raj system in the country. BCC Akhnoor and several other district and block bodies of the party also organised similar functions.
