Normalcy restored in Poonch, curfew lifted

JAMMU : With the return of normalcy, a day-long curfew was lifted from the bordering Poonch town of the State.

Curfew was imposed in Poonch City this morning following clashes between two communities after a member of a majority community yesterday allegedly slapped a Sikh girl over an issue.

According to a statement issued here, Minister of Housing, Horticulture and Culture Raman Bhalla , MLA Poonch Ajaz Ahmad Jan, Divisional Commissioner Jammu Shantmanu and Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, Rajesh Kumar this afternoon visited Poonch and held meetings with prominent citizens and locals of both the communities.

“Both the communities had no differences and appreciated the role of administration in promptly defusing the situation,” an official spokesperson said.

Army also held a flag march in the town in view of tense situation. Two persons were injured in stone pelting in the clashes and immediately shifted to the district hospital.

Members of Sikh community this morning took out a protest march amidst slogans demanding arrest of the culprit, who allegedly slapped a girl of the community in full public view.

Partial bandh was also observed in the Poonch town against the incident.

Tension prevailed in Poonch town yesterday when a boy identified as Jameel Ahmed, a resident of Dalhaan, an auto-rickshaw driver ‘slapped’ a Sikh girl when the duo had heated arguments over an issue. (AGENCIES)
