SOPORE, May 25: The District Mountain Running Association in collaboration with J&K Sports Development Association (JKSDA) organized Sopore Mountain Running Championship from Watlab to Babashukur-ud-Din with a distance of 5 kilometers, here today.
The race was flagged off by Rouf Tramboo, vice president (JKSDA).
Over 70 athletes took part in the championship and were given awareness about preservation of the environment.
Mohd Saleem Wani of Chinar Sports Club secured first place with a timing of 18:16: 27, while Zubair Ahmad of the same Club got second place and Manan Ahmad of Sopore got third place.
Mr Tramboo, who was also chief guest on the occasion distributed prizes among position holders and suggested that more such activities should be organized in the area as well as in other places to develop strength and imagination among the children.
The JKMRA, general secretary, Riyaz Wani said, “We are planning to hold more such Championships for Mountain Running athletes of different age groups in near future. We also plan to hold some training camps and National level tournaments for said sports to be taught”.
Bashir Damna, Altaf-ul-Rehman, Sajid Hamid, Nissar Hussain, Umer Nabi, Tanver Hussain, Ahsan Ali and Qursheed Ahmad were also present on the occasion.
The position holders will be selected for State Mountain Running Championship which will be held at Fakir Gujree Harwan Dara in Srinagar.
