Army organises Volleyball tourney

SRINAGAR, July 9: 150 Field Regiment, under the aegis of Daggar Artillery Brigade organised a volleyball tournament at Uri, which concluded here this evening.
A total of 16 teams participated in the tournament which was held on a knock-out basis. After some keenly contested matches, the final playoff took place between the Uri Stars and Nambla teams on the 8th July 2012 in which Uri Stars emerged as the Champions of the Volleyball League 2012. Md Yaser Mir of the Uri Stars was adjudged as the ‘Player of the Tournament’.
The Chief Guest of the occasion, Maj Gen Bipin Rawat, YSM, SM, VSM, handed out the cash award and token mementoes to the Winner & Runner Up teams. Speaking on the occasion he appreciated the initiative taken by the Dagger Arty Brigade and remarked that the Valley has no dearth of talent and given suitable opportunity, training and exposure, each town can produce a Tendulkar, Bhutia or Paes. He highlighted that the aim of this tournament was to allow budding players of volleyball to showcase their talent and iden some players who could be given the opportunity to attend state and national level training camps so they could act as motivation for others while they leave an indelible mark in the sporting arena.
The other attendees included Brigadier BS Raju, Commander Kalapahar Brigade, Brigadier Ravi, Commander, Dagger Arty Brigade and the AWAM which relentlessly cheered the two finalists as they displayed a healthy competitive spirit.
