Preventing road accidents

Sir,
It is sad that as many as 11.3 lakh people have been killed and 53 lakh others injured/disabled due to road accidents in India during the last 10 years speaks volumes about havoc that the road accidents have caused and brought into focus the need for observing traffic rules to prevent such fatal accidents. Stastistics also reveal that 20 children die everyday in India in road accidents. All this calls for the need of creating awareness in the public and the drivers for adherence to traffic rules.Wearing of seat belts both by the drivers and passengers need to be made compulsory as seat belts serve as lifesavers for all the occupants of the vehicles. As many as 111 countries across the world have so far implemented comprehensive seat belt laws and it is time our country realized the necessisty of seat belts and made it mandatory for all the occupants of the vehicle to wear them. There is also a need to make use of latest equipments such as CCTVs and other gadgets to detect offences on the road and punish the offenders.
The Traffic Police and other law enforcement agencies entrusted with the responsibility of regulating traffic on the roads should work in tandem with eachother to keep strict vigil on traffic offences such as speed violations, overloading of passengers/goods,use of mobile phones while driving, driving in drunken state and driving without wearing helmets. The main cause of road accidents is overspeeding which is generally resorted to for fun, show off or to meet time deadlines. Those resorting to overspeeding need to be given exemplary punishment to prevent accidents. The passangers themselves should be vigilant about their safety and should not hesitate in lodging complaint agaist the drivers driving under the influence of alcohol or changing CDs or using mobile phones while.driving.The Transport Department ought to issue ‘Driving Licence’ only after rigorous tests.Passanger vehicles should be regularly checked and old and worn out vehicles should not be allowed to ply on the roads especially in hilly areas.Accident prone sites, especially along the Jammu & Kashmir National Highway should be identified, parapets constructed and traffic warning signs and signal boards erected to prevent recurrence of accidents.Accidents caused due to human errors such as driving fatigue, sleep etc, especially on the long routes can be avoided by ensuring that at least two drivers drive the vehicles in shifts.Drivers should be made aware of the traffic signs and signals and strong punitive action including heavy fine should be imposed on the violators of traffic rules/signals.Last but not least ,roads should be properly maintained.
Yours etc…
