Basmati production witnessing radical changes: VC SKUAST-J

JAMMU, June 28: A one-day interactive workshop on ‘Basmati’ was organized by SKUAST-J Chatha in collaboration with Basmati Export Development Foundation (APEDA, Govt of India) where in more than 200 basmati growers along with scientists, field functionaries and rice traders participated.
Prof PK Sharma, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-J in his message conveyed that Basmati production and utilization is witnessing radical changes in Jammu province and needs joint efforts of farmers, scientists and field functionaries to give it further boost to improve the economy of Basmati growers.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr SS Jamwal, Director Agriculture, advised farmers to adopt green manuring for sustainable crop production and assured that Department of Agriculture will work in tandem with BEDF and SKUAST-J to take Basmati production to new heights.
While welcoming the delegates on the occasion Dr JP Sharma, Dean Agriculture, recalled the fact that Basmati is identity of Jammu province and more scientific knowledge must be imparted to the farmers so that its quality is maintained in every household of a Basmati grower.
Dr Ritesh Sharma, senior Scientist, BEDF, elaborated the various technologies to the farmers for production of export quality basmati and emphasized that farmer must always use certified seed and should have the competency to produce the quality seed for themselves.
Dr Hafiz Ahmad, Dr Sachin Gupta and Dr Rajinder Peshin gave detailed power point presentations on sustainable plant protection measures for quality Basmati production and focused on judicious use of pesticides.
The program ended with vote of thanks given by Dr Rakesh Nanda.
