NEW DELHI, July 23: Speaking on the Railway Budget in Rajya Sabha, Leader of Opposition, Ghulam Nabi Azad said he could not find anything new or revolutionary in the Railway Budget, as was being given out by Railway Minister.
Quoting from one of the speeches of Prime Minister in which he said that “UPA Government could not think anything, UPA Government could not do anything: somebody should have thought, somebody should have done”, Azad said that if UPA Government could not have done anything how could Prime Minister attend some of the landmark events like launching of PSLV C23, Inauguration of Modern Railway Station at Katra and Uri II Hydro-electric project within one month of assuming the office. Azad further asked how could the trial run of Semi-High Train be conducted between New Delhi-Agra on 30th June?
Commenting on the Bullet train, Azad said that NDA Government has hyped a lot the concept of bullet train, whereas the fact remains that the groundwork for running the bullet train was started during the tenure of UPA Government after an agreement between Prime Ministers of India and Japan was signed in May 2013, following which the feasibility study financed jointly by India and Japan, was initiated in December 2013 to be completed in eighteen months. Mr Azad said that even business development model is being studied by French Railways for running bullet train in Bombay-Ahmedabad sector.
Counselling the Government to lay emphasis on Semi-high Speed Trains being a low investment proposition, Azad said that in view of the financial constraints and the paying capacity of our population, Semi- High Speed train is the viable solution in Indian context.
