BERLIN, Aug 2: Two cars of a train tipped over following a collision near a station in southwestern Germany, authorities said, injuring a number of passengers.
The accident happened yesterday near the main station in the city of Mannheim, which is a major railway junction.
The city’s fire service said two cars with a total of 110 people on board tipped over following a collision with a freight train, news agency dpa reported, adding that five people sustained serious injuries and another 40 were lightly injured.
Both trains were travelling slowly at the time. The cause of the accident was unclear.
Germany’s national railway, Deutsche Bahn, said five carriages in total derailed in the accident at about 8.50 pm (local time) yesterday, including the two that tipped over. It put the number of injuries at 12, one of them serious and the rest light. It said the roughly 250 people on board the train were evacuated by emergency services.
The passenger train was travelling from Graz, Austria to Saarbruecken, on Germany’s border with France. The station in Mannheim was closed. (AGENCIES)
