JAMMU, Sept 5: The Department of Gastroenterology Super Specialty Hospital in Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu has added another feather to its cap by removing a sewing needle from the intestine of a young female hailing from a far-flung area through endoscopic ally thereby avoiding a major surgery which could have otherwise contemplated to remove this needle
On enquiring the history from the patient as to ascertain the reasons and circumstances in which this deadly needle was swallowed, the patient narrated to the doctors of Gastroenterology Department headed by HoD Dr Shoket Chowdhary that she intended to stitch something, took this needle in her teeth while searching for the thread which most of the women does as a habit.
In the meantime, she had sneezing thereby engulfing the needle into her stomach. She reported to the doctors following ingestion of this needle which was stuck by that time beyond stomach  in to second part of the Duodenum where maximum up to this level the upper gastrointestinal scope could reach.
The difficulty in removing needle was that it had both sharp edges which could have damaged the close tunnel of gastrointestinal tract while taking it out as the end of scope is also very sensitive. The doctors had to avoid an injury to Scope as well so removal of the needle was technically very demanding, Dr Chowdhary said.
“The message here is that we should avoid putting such dangerous things in to our mouth which most of us actually do,” Dr Chowdhary said.
