POONCH, Sept 12: Expressing grief and anguish over the loss of life and damage to property due to floods and landsides across Jammu and Kashmir, senior National Conference leaders, Peer Mushtaq Ahmed Bukhari and Th Rachpal Singh today prayed for safety of the marooned people and lauded the efforts of the Army and the civil administration for taking massive rescue and relief operations.
“The efforts put in by the administration and the Army besides personal monitoring by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has saved thousands of precious lives who are trapped in the flood ravaged valley and other parts of the State”, they said in a joint statement.
State Vice President of National Conference Mr Bukhari and MLA Mr Singh conveyed their sympathies to the bereaved families and said the low lying areas of Srinagar and Pulwama have braved the major brunt of floods. They expressed concern over the families still trapped in floods despite best efforts of the administration and the Army and hoped that they too will be rescued and shifted to safer areas immediately. They said that colossal damages caused to infrastructure, utility services and residential houses will take months to get in order but the priority has to be accorded to immediate rehabilitation of the flood sufferers.
“Poonch and Rajouri districts have equally suffered huge losses as several precious lives perished in the flash floods and landslides”, they said, adding that massive land erosion has been reported besides collapse of houses and other utility services. They stressed the need for undertaking massive relief operations in the affected areas with thrust on shelter and medical facilities of the affected population.
Bukhari and Mr Singh sought special package for Poonch and Rajouri districts especially Surankote where road communication has been affected immensely. They stressed the need for reaching out to the people as approach roads to all the five motorable bridges have been washed away. Several areas are virtually cut off with rest of the State, they maintained.
The two leaders sought special rehabilitation package for Surankote, saying the families in vulnerable areas are required to be shifted to safer places.
They appealed to the public to remain calm and do not play in the hands of petty politicians who play politics on dead bodies.
