It is a matter of great relief and satisfaction that various Union Ministries have come forward to provide relief to the flood affected people in Jammu and Kashmir. The Union Ministry of Minority Affairs had deputed a team of high ranking officers to assess the losses people have suffered and make recommendation for relief to the needy. The team has concluded its visit and submitted the report. The Minister took no time in approving grant of 120 crore rupees especially for providing scholarship to the children of the minority community who have suffered great losses. The Ministry has asked the State Government to extend the date of applications for grant of scholarships to ending December this year enabling the deserving students to send in their applications. Three State channelizing agencies will furnish the lists of loanees who are affected by floods and suffered complete loss/ partial loss, by October 31. This will facilitate the setting up of micro-enterprises and providing employment to the local people.
The Ministry does not want to remain confined only to giving scholarships but is also proposing to provide training to the minority youth in J&K in various skills that will enable them to earn a living. This means that the Ministry will be catering to many needs of the minority community even other than in times of calamity like the floods. We would naturally wish that the members of the minority community in the State take full advantage of these facilities and improve their education and learn skills so that they are able to live a life of their own without depending on either the Government or private agencies to provide them the means of subsistence.
