JAMMU, Oct 21: J&K Freedom Fighters Association and General Bikram Singh Yaadgar Committee paid tributes to Sarup Singh on his 52nd martyr day.
Sarup Singh laid down his life while fighting the Chinese army in snow bound area of Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir during Indo-China war in the year 1962.
Large number of people from all walks of life paid tributes to the martyr by garlanding his portrait at RS Pura.
Narrating the bravery of Sarup Singh, Ved Gandotra, President FFA said that Chinese army attacked India on October 19, 1962 to annexe Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. Sarup Singh second in command with few ill equipped soldiers, put a brave fight keeping the fully equipped heavy force of China at bay. A bomb shell of Chinese army hit the post under Sarup Singh badly injuring him and killing two of his soldiers. The remaining soldiers insisted him to leave the post but Sarup Singh refused and told the soldiers that he would fight the enemy up to the last bullet and the last drop of his blood, he added.
Sarup Singh fought single handily for seven hours firing from all the available weapons one after the other to keep Chinese army in illusion that the post had full strength, Gandotra said, adding that Singh inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy till he breathed his last.
He further disclosed that the body of Sarup Singh was found sprayed with bullets and the martyr of the great nation, the true son of India expired in the lap of ‘Bharat Mata’ on October 21, 1962.
Government of India conferred the second highest gallantry award ‘Mahavir Chakra’ posthumously on Sarup Singh, he added.
The residents of Panchayat Halqa Gadigarh as a token of respect and remembrance to the martyr named the chowk as ‘Havaldar Sarup Singh Mahavir Chakra Chowk’ and appealed to the concerned authorities to take note of it.
