SRINAGAR, Oct 24: A group of militants today fled into the dense woods after firing at security forces this morning in North Kashmir’s Handwara area while a follower in Police was killed in South Kashmir last evening.
Superintendent of Police Handwara, Ghulam Jeelani, told Excelsior that troops this morning launched searches in Wudur Bala area of Handwara in the frontier district of Kupwara. The militants fired on the search party and fled taking the advantage of dense woods.
“We launched searches in the area and in an adjacent village but no militants were found. The search operation was called off later in the afternoon”, he added.
Sources said that security forces including 21 RR, 6 RR , 30 RR, 32 RR and 9 Para of Army and 92 Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Special Operations Group (SOG), Handwara launched searches in the Wudur Bala forests in Rajwar after a tip off about the presence of 2-3 Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants. The militants fired on the troops at around 6 a.m. and fled.
In the meantime, militants shot dead a follow in Jammu and Kashmir in Kulgam district of South Kashmir last evening.
Superintendent of Police, Kulgam, Mohammad Shafi Mir told Excelsior that Follower Rafiq Ahmed Mir of IRP 12th battalion was shot dead by LeT militants at Kulgam in last night.
The SP said the militants barged into Mir’s house at Hassanporabagh last night and fired upon him from a point blank range killing him on the spot. He said that the militants managed to escape after carrying out the attack.
In the meantime, security forces yesterday busted a militant hideout in forest area of Lolab in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district and recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition.
Police said that acting on a specific information, Kupwara police along with 28-RR launched a search operation in the forest area of Watnar, Anderbugh, Lolab.
“During the search, a militant hideout was busted and huge cache of arms and ammunitions including one AK 56 rifle, 05 AK magazines, 1000 AK rounds, 01 UBGL, 02 UBGL grenades, 04 pistol, 04 pistol magazines, 32 pistol rounds and 21 grenades were recovered from the hide out”, police said.
