Soldier, girl killed; one injured in Uri

SRINAGAR, Nov 8: A soldier and 17-year old girl were killed and another woman was injured as Pakistani troops targeted Indian posts this evening along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector of North Kashmir.
This is for the first time that there was casualty of Army or civilian in Kashmir valley along the LoC this year due to Pakistani firing.
A defence spokesman said that Pakistani troops violated ceasefire and restored to unprovoked firing at around 1715 hours in Uri sector leading to killing of one soldier and a civilian girl. “The girl has been identified as 17-year old Gulshan Bano of Kamalkote. Our troops responded appropriately”, he added.
An Army officer told Excelsior that Pakistani troops opened fire with small arms at 5-6 Army posts near Nanak post at Kamalkote along the LoC in Uri sector evening.
The officer said that firing continued till 7 p.m. He said that Indian troops also fired back. He said that one soldier Havaldar Mayapan of 11 Madras and a girl Gulshan Bano daughter of Mohammad Rafiq Bhati of Kamalkote was killed and another girl Rubeena was injured.
The officer said that firing was aimed at giving cover to the infiltrators. He said that Army patrolling along the LoC in the sector has been intensified for the possible infiltration. He said that Pakistan is desperate to infiltrate more and more militants before the snowfall in Uri sector that hampers the infiltration. The LoC witnessed heavy snowfall yesterday and 4-6 feet snow has accumulated on the LoC.
In the meantime, four Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) men were injured as militants attacked their vehicle at Qazigund in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district this evening.
A Police officer said militants opened fire upon a CRPF vehicle of 163 batallion near Qazigund Railway over bridge over on National Highway this evening resulting in injuries to four CRPF men including two Assistant Sub Inspectors.
All the injured were shifted to district hospital Anantnag where from they were removed to SKIMS Soura for specialized treatment.
Army, police and CRPF cordoned off the whole area and launched the searches to nab the attackers. However, the militants had fled after carried out the attack.
Police today said that they have arrested Divisional Commander of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) from Sopore in North Kashmir. He said on a specific information of Srinagar police regarding the presence of top JeM commander in Yumberzalwari, forests at Bomie Sopore, a joint operation was launched by  Police, 27 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and CRPF 179 Batallion in the area.
During the operation a top militant of JeM outfit Sadeeq Ahmad alias Sadiq resident of  Haripore Khyber Pakhtoon Khan, Pakistan was arrested.
He said one AK rifle, two magazines and 70 rounds of ammunition and a pouch were recovered from him.
