17 injured in NC-PDP clash

Srinagar, Nov 13: Station House Officer (SHO) Kulgam was among at least 16 supporters of ruling National Conference (NC) and Opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) injured as clashes broke out between them today during filing of nominations by their candidates at Kulgam Mini Secretariat in South Kashmir.
Reports said that two candidates of NC – Imran Nabi Dar from Kulgam and Sakina Yatoo from Noorabad – filed nominations papers with the district election officer at Kulgam this morning and were coming out when four candidates of PDP – Sartaj Madni from Devsar, Abdul Gaffar Sofi from Home Shalibugh, Abdul Majid Paddar from Noorabad and Nazir Ahmad Lawvey from Kulgam – were entering the Mini Secretariat to file the nominations.
The workers of the two parties were raising slogans in favour of their candidates during which clashes broke out. The workers attacked each other with firepots and lathis in which around 15 workers of both the parties were injured.
The SHO, Kulgam, Irshad Ahmad and three two other police men were injured in the clashes. Police charged batons and fired tear smoke shells to disperse the workers of the two parties.
Police and Central Reserve Police was deployed in strength and they chased away the rival supporters of two parties.
Kulgam is going to polls in the second phase of elections on December 2. Tomorrow is the last date for filing of nominations for the second phase of polls.
