RAJOURI, Nov 13: Brutal murder of a College student in a moving mini-bus evoked strong protest by people on Jammu-Rajouri highway near Kallar, resulting into massive blockade for about three hours today.
Reports said the incident took place when 20-year-old Deepika Sharma (student of BA Part-II), daughter of Mukesh Kumar, hailing from Kallar was returning home from Swami College, Rajouri. A PG student, Ashish Kumar , son of Satish Kumar of Muradpur was also sitting behind her seat in the same mini-bus bearing registration No. JK-11/ 2071. The youth was conversating with the girl on some issue in the vehicle and it also attracted attention of some passengers. She was sitting behind driver’s seat.
As the girl stood up from her seat to board off the vehicle at Kallar, the youth suddenly attacked her with a sharp knife. He attacked on her abdomen and then he pierced this knife through her throat and escaped towards nearby river. The people raised alarm and started chasing. A police man sitting there also started chasing and with the help of horsemen collecting sand in the river, the accused youth was nabbed and thrashed. He consumed some poisonous pills which he had kept in the pocket. Later, police also reached there but the girl died on the spot.
The news spread like wild fire in the area. Girl’s house was just 100 ft away from the site of murder. Her family members and other neighbours also rushed there. The police shifted the body to district hospital for post mortem. It happened at around 3 pm. Irate people raised barricades on Jammu-Poonch highway at Kallar and started protest. The traffic came to grinding halt on highway. The people alleged increase in lawlessness in the area. Later, Addl SP and SSP Rajouri also reached there. The highway remained blocked up to 5.30 pm. A large number vehicles remained stranded. Later, the people lifted dharna. The accused youth was referred to GMC Jammu. The police said that love angle is believed to be reason behind the incident. The youth’s statement is yet to be recorded but investigation has been started.
