Hazards to public health

Zewen to the south of the main city of Srinagar but within the jurisdiction of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation has become the source of great health hazard to the local people one and all and more especially the children. It is because of pollution caused by the stone crushers that raise enormous dust. There are clear rules of the Municipal Corporation where and at what distance from the populated area of the city a stone crusher can be installed. But unholy alliance between the owners of stone crushing units and the Municipal authorities has emboldened the former to care two hoots for sanitation rules. The inhabitants of locality in Zewan have made many complaints to the authorities but as a nexus exists, nobody is prepared to respond to these complaints. Bronchitis, throat soar, eye sore, headaches and damaged vision are common diseases with which most of the people of the locality especially the children are beset. The irony is that Municipal authorities say that they will act only when a written complaint is made to them. Is it not their job to ensure that the environs and ecology of the city and its dwellers are strictly maintained in accordance with the norms set forth? Why should they wait for a written complaint whereas they can take an action even on just being conveyed of some irregularity done or just by making a surprise visit to the site and seeing how the situation looks.
