Railway Board gets environment directorate

NEW DELHI, Jan 3:  Ministry of Railways has decided to constitute a new directorate named Environment Management for a clean and green environment.
According to the Railway Ministry order, the directorate has been constituted under the Adviser (ME) Project of the Railway Board and has been re-designated as Advisor (Environment).    According to the order, Executive Directors of Electrical, Traffic Commercial, Land and Amenities, Finance, General and Mechanical would be handling issues related to Environment Directorate.
These officials in addition to their normal assigned duties, would discharge duties connected with the Environment Management. However, Advisor (Environment) would be the full-time advisor.    The body would be responsible for ensuring effective utilisation of water resources and conduct of energy and water audits and those related with environment management.    The government in 2014-15 Railway Budget, has announced to form a separate department for environment and cleanliness.    Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu had also directed audit of water, energy and diesel so that the actual consumption could be recorded and wastage avoided.    The Railways last year had also taken several initiatives for the use of solar energy. Solar panels were installed at the Katra Railway Bhawan, Rae Bareli Coach factory and other places.  (UNI)
