Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘J&K’s vast population deprived of specialist doctors’ Dec 31.
Leave aside specialist, even general physicians are not available in Primary Health Centres located at rural areas. Had doctors been available at these centres, the hospitals in cities and towns would not have been crowded.
The absence of doctors in PHCs in peripheral areas is a well known fact. The concerned authorities are very much aware of the problem. The irony of the matter is that no concrete action plan is framed to tackle the problem for ever. The successive Governments have been claiming to have improved the rural health infrastucture, but these tall claims do not exist on ground.
The rural people live on the mercy of paramedical staff. These people manage PHCs, and prescrible medicines. There is acute shortage of doctors, and there are a good number of doctors who have not been provided employment yet. It may be mentioned here that the super speciality hospitals in the State have yet to become fully functional as there is acute shortage of staff to run them efficiently.
Yours etc…
Arvind Jamwal
