Azad urges Cong leaders to maintain discipline, unity

JAMMU, Jan 13: In the backdrop of some of Congress leaders demanding resignation of Pradesh Congress Committee chief Prof Saifuddin Soz, former Union Minister and leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad today asked the party leaders to maintain discipline and work for the unity of the Congress party.
Asserting that the Congress Party is seriously looking into the causes of not-so-good performance in the recently held Assembly elections, Mr Azad urged the Party leaders and cadre to work unitedly and steadfastly for reviving and strengthening the Party.
In press statement issued here today, Mr Azad said “It is only uncharitable and irrelevant but also uncalled for and unwarranted in the obtained political situation.”
He said difference of opinion is integral to any democratic political party and that the Congress Party has always encouraged dialogue and discussion, however, it is of prime importance to maintain discipline and unity at all costs.
Underlining the need to maintain discipline, Mr Azad said whosoever, serious and cogent the argument may be, it is not at all desirable to come in the open against the PCC leadership as there are avenues and fora available to all the leaders and cadres to express their views and opinion. He also called upon the Party leaders not to speak out of the way on sensitive political issues as this causes more damage and harm to the interest of the Party rather than serving any purpose.
“Airing the views publicly against the PCC leadership is not going to serve the goal of reviving the fortunes of the Party”, he asserted.
He further said such moves cannot be countenanced and all the leaders should work in tandem to rejuvenate the Party. Commenting on the outcome of the recent Assembly elections, Azad said, ” while Congress Party has not done as badly as was being projected by the vested interests, yet the performance has not been as rosy as it ought to have been. There is a need to examine the causes and take corrective steps”.
Mr Azad further urged upon the Party leaders and cadre to strive for re-establishing the connect with the people at the grass-root level and try to address the problems and grievances of the people.
