CUJ organizes lecture on ‘Climate Change & Management Strategies’

JAMMU, Jan 19: The Central University of Jammu (CUJ) today organized a lecture on, “Climate Change in North India– Evidences, Impact & Management Strategies”,  delivered by Prof  S S  Kukal, former Director, School of Agro meteorology and Climate Change and Director, Electron Microscopy and Nano-technology lab, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.
Prof  Kukal highlighted various factors which are leading to the climate change. He particularly emphasized upon the erratic rainfall, sunshine hours and temperature regimes. He broad forth the impact of climate changes on Agriculture production. During an abnormal rise in temperature of just 5-days there was a 15 percent reduction in wheat yield, said Prof  Kukal and added that a similar impact of climate change has been recorded on other crops.
Prof Kukal said that the impacts of climate change could be mitigated by being serious about our environment. He appealed for the conservative use of our natural resources by reducing the use of Air conditioners, cars and fossil fuels.
The Vice-chancellor of CUJ, Prof Devanand pointed out that these are me and you who are responsible for bringing changes in the climate. Climate change does not only affect agriculture but our health also, he said and added that it is high time for all of us to be environment conscious and save it for our posterity.
Earlier, Prof H S Sehgal, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences CUJ introduced the speaker and formally welcomed the dignitaries and the audience. Responding to the some points raised on the sustainability of agricultural production, he informed that India is preparing its contingency plans for mitigating the impacts of climate change by evolving temperature, drought, and flood resistant crop verities.
Prof  Deepak Raj Gupta, Academic Administrator,  Jit Singh Registrar, Dr  P S  Pathania, Senior consultant, Dr  N R  Sharma, Dean Students Welfare, Prof  Lokesh Verma, Academic Co-ordinator, Prof  Shyam Singh, Deans of  the Schools, Heads of the Departments, Faculty and students attended the lecture and actively participated in discussion.
